• What is a domain name?

  A domain name is the unique web address, that a website or web page can be accessed on.

  Every website is hosted on a web server, which in turn has its own IP address. An IP address might look like 192.126.40.00 – not very memorable! Using a domain name means that visitors don’t need to remember a whole bunch of numbers, and can instead use a simple domain, such as “LCN”, to access a website.

• How do I buy domain names?

  Simply search for the domain name that takes your fancy using the search box at the top of this page. Don’t worry if your preferred domain is already taken – just think of an alternative or take a look at one of the hundreds of new domain name extensions now available. The right domain is out there for you, just waiting to be snapped up.

• How much do domain names cost?

  This depends on the type of domain name you’re after and how long you wish to register it for. When you search for a domain name, you’ll see the prices listed beside each option. The drop-down menu highlights further savings you can make, with our multi-year discounts, so you can easily secure your dream domain, at the cheapest possible price.

• How long does it take to buy a domain name?

  Buying a domain at LCN takes seconds. In most cases, your domain name will be ready to use, by the time it takes you to navigate back to your control panel to use it.

• What's the maximum period I can buy a domain for?

  The majority of domain name extensions can be registered for a maximum of 10 years at a time (except .CO which is 5 years). You cannot own a domain “forever”, but you can effectively keep a domain name for as long as you need it by continuing to renew it.

• What happens when my domain name expires?

  Forgetting to renew a domain can be a disaster for a business. That’s why we send out renewal reminders 90, 60, 30, 14 and 7 days before the expiry date. You can also choose to receive a free text message 7 days before the expiry date. If your domain does expire, you still have a chance to renew.

  For .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domains, there is a 90 day ‘grace-period’, whereas most other domains have 30 days. There can be a fee to restore an expired domain, depending on the status of the domain name. The fee depends on the type of extension, which is why we’d always recommend renewing your domain name well in advance of the expiry date.

• Are all domain names eligible for domain proxy?

  Domain proxy can be used when you register any .co.uk, .com, .net, .me.uk, .uk, .org.uk or .net.uk domain. We will send your domain registration to the Registry with masked details. For more details on how to add domain proxy to your domains, check out this support guide.

• How long is domain proxy free for?

  The domain proxy service is free for the first registration term. So, whether you buy a domain for 1, 2, 5, or 10 years, your domain proxy service will be free for the same amount of time.

• How much does domain proxy cost to renew?

  The renewal of our domain proxy service is £8 a year. This is an optional extra and it’s completely up to you whether you renew. If you don't wish to continue using your domain proxy package, you can simply delete it via your control panel with a single click.
